General Information
We try not to have too many rules, but there are a few things to keep in mind while you are in the Media Center:
* Do not disturb others -- Use a quiet voice so as not to disturb those who are studying.
* Do not check out materials for a friend.
* Return all materials you do not want to check out to their correct place on the shelf or to a reshelving cart. Be sure that you return any books you have checked out in your name directly to the book return box. This is the only place to return library books. If you have checked out a word processor or a reference book, return these directly to the person working at the circulation desk.
* When using a computer, always LOG-OFF before leaving the machine.
* Computers are ONLY to be used for school assignments.
*** NO GAMES, DOWNLOADING, STREAMING, CHAT ROOMS, MESSAGING, OR EMAIL

Browsing Area............
There are sofas and rocking chairs in the Media Center for your relaxation.
Magazines...................
Brunswick High subscribes to approximately fifty magazines. We keep our magazines for two years and all back issues may be checked out for the normal two week period. Current magazines are housed in the casual browsing area of the library. They may not be checked out. The magazines are indexed in Ebsco's Magazine Article Summaries on our Media Center network as well as in the GALILEO database on the Internet. We encourage you to look up articles for school assignments in either the GALILEO Databases or in the SIRS Database.
Please ask one of the Media Specialists to help you find this valuable resources on the BHS Website.
Newspapers..........................
Newspapers are kept for two weeks and then discarded. We have The Brunswick News and the Georgia Times Union.
Media Center Passes...............................
Your teacher will issue you a pass in your agenda to do work for that class during the school day. You must sign in on the clipboard at the desk. Passes during the three lunches must be obtained from the teacher on duty outside the lunchroom on the sidewalk ramp.
How to Check Out Materials -- Must have ID CARD
In the fall, student pictures are taken for ID cards. Your ID card must be used at all times to check out materials. Your barcode is at the bottom of the card and your student ID number is automatically entered in our automated circulation system. This is your permanent Brunswick HIgh School barcode number. Select the books and materials you want and show your student card at the circulation desk to check them out. Lost cards may be replaced for a $5.00 charge.
This same barcode number can be used to purchase food in the cafeteria. Simply deposit money in your cafeteria account and use this number when moving through the cafeteria payment station.
Books! Books! Books! .....................
The library has over 30,000 books. New books are often displayed. If we do not have a title you want, be sure to suggest it to us. There are also special cards available at the circulation desk for this purpose. We are especially interested if we have missed a specific title in a series.
How Many Books may I Check Out?
Since we are in the business of encouraging you to read, study, and produce excellent products, we do not place a limit on the number of books or materials that you check out. However, in special instances, when your entire class is studying the same subject, your teacher may put books on reserve and not allow them to circulate. All materials may be renewed for an additional 2 week period. Check at the circulation desk if you have any questions.
How Long May I Keep the Books and Materials?
Our circulation period is two weeks for everything except reference books and laptop word processors. They are used extensively by everyone and must be returned the next day before the first bell. This is a privilege you should not abuse. Many schools do not allow reference materials to be checked out and certainly not word processors. THINK OF THE OTHER STUDENTS AND RETURN MATERIALS AS SOON AS POSSIBLE SO EVERYONE CAN BENEFIT FROM THIS SERVICE.
Overdues
A list of overdue materials is placed on the media center door once each six weeks. It is your responsibility to return materials before the due date. We charge a daily overdue fine of 5 cents per day, and, if you have overdue materials, we restrict your check out privileges until the overdue materials are returned.
Alpha Smarts
BHS has AlphaSmart word processors for you to check out for overnight use. The word processor automatically saves your work. When you are finished typing a document bring the AlphaSmart up to the desk and you will be given a cable to connect to a regular computer. Open Microsoft WORD and then push send on the word processor. Your typed document will be transferred into Word for you to save to your PIN folder or to Print. If Alpha Smarts are not returned each day there is a 25 cent fine for each day past the due date.
Print If you need to print a document you find in one of the databases of GALILEO, GROLIER ENCYCLOPEDIAS you may print up to three pages We just ask that you be discriminating on what is printed. Remember you can copy parts of the article and paste into Microsoft WORD. DO NOT PRINT PAGES FROM THE INTERNET - You must copy and paste because of the graphics and advertisements associated with web pages. Ask for help, if you have questions. What else can I do in the media center?
The media center offers a variety of opportunities for computing, telecommuting, and multi-media production. Ask the media staff for details.
