Alternative Educational Opportunities
Offered by Glynn County High Schools

Students working in all programs are expected to abide by the Glynn County School System behavior code. End of Course tests are required in certain courses as mandated by the state. New Directions students must complete courses by the last day of senior exams for grades to be posted and/or seniors to be eligible to participate in graduation ceremonies.

New Directions

The New Directions program is designed to enable Glynn County students to earn credit and graduate on time by working in a performance based environment. The NovaNET and PLATO programs consist of four sections at Brunswick High School using computer-assisted instructional software. Students work at their own pace to earn academic credit in half-unit increments. The Business Procedures class is held at Glynn Academy and enables students to earn elective credit in a traditional, 75-hour classroom environment.

Target audience ­ Students who will be on track for a timely graduation as a result of this program

Investment - $20 non-refundable fee, payable in cash at program induction

Dates/times ­ Between 25 and 100 hours after school, Mondays through Thursdays

Attendance requirements ­ Class attendance is required. Only three absences per class are allowed. Upon the fourth absence, without substantive documentation, the student is withdrawn.

Performance Learning Center

The Glynn County Performance Learning Center (PLC) provides an opportunity to selected students who have fallen behind in earning units in a traditional high school setting to recover credits in a performance based program in order to graduate in a timely manner. NovaNET computer-assisted instructional software is utilized. Students work at their own pace to earn academic credit in half-unit increments. Additionally, students complete service learning activities for which they earn units of credit. Based on space available, students selected enroll in either the PLC day program or the PLC evening program. The PLC is located at 1410 "I" Street in Brunswick.

Intercession

Intercession is designed to provide Glynn County students some extended time after the fall semester, as an additional opportunity to meet the minimum standards to be awarded credit and a passing score for an academic course. A course replacement grade of 70-74 is the maximum grade that can be earned during Intercession. Intercession mini-courses are 24 contact hours in length. Some are taught in a traditional manner; others are available online.

Target audience - Students who fail a core academic course fall semester with a grade between 60 and 69

Investment - $90 non-refundable fee per half unit course

Dates/times - Between months of January and March, may include hours before or after school, on Saturdays or online. Individual intercession teachers create their course schedules.

Attendance requirements - Attendance is the student's responsibility. Even one absence may result in withdrawal and a loss of tuition.

Summer School

Glynn County Summer School offers students the opportunity to recover credit in core academic subjects or to earn elective credit toward an on-time graduation. Students may enroll in one or two half-unit courses.

Target audience - Students who need to recover credit to graduate in a timely manner;
out-of-county students, on a space available basis

Investment - $160 fee per half unit course for Glynn County residents. This must be paid in full at the time of registration and is non refundable. Out-of-county students pay registration fees of $210 per half unit.

Dates/times ­ Three weeks in June from June 11-July 1. Each half-unit course is 60 hours in length: 4 hours a day for 15 days, Monday through Friday. Classes meet from 8:00 a.m. to noon or from 12:30 to 4:30 p.m. Classes will be held at Glynn Academy.

Attendance requirements ­ Class attendance is required. Only two absences per class are allowed. Upon the third absence, without substantive documentation, the student is withdrawn.

Eligibility ­ Students of Glynn County residents. Out-of-county students may enroll on a space available basis.

  Georgia Virtual School

The Georgia Virtual School provides Web-based Advanced Placement and core high school courses for Georgia students. Courses are designed and taught by highly qualified Georgia teachers. The program offers online, tuition-based summer and after school courses for students state-wide.

Target audience ­ Both accelerated students desiring an advanced placement course not available and students who need to make up lost credit to be on track for a timely graduation

Investment ­ $300 per half unit of credit

Dates/times ­ Approximately 100 hours per half-unit of credit; courses available 24 hours a day, 7 days per week

Attendance requirements ­ Students who fall behind more than two weeks in a course are administratively withdrawn from the program, and tuition is forfeited.
