Haywood named principal at Risley Early College Academy

Glynn County Schools Superintendent Howard Mann has announced the appointment of Senetra Haywood as principal of Risley Early College Academy (RECA).  The Glynn County Board of Education approved the appointment at its June 22 meeting.

Haywood, who has 11 years of experience in education, moves to RECA from the Golden Isles Career Academy where she served as youth apprenticeship coordinator for the past two years.  Haywood began her career in education in McIntosh County as a high school teacher.  During her time in McIntosh County, Haywood also served in several administrative positions including testing director, information systems coordinator and technology director.  She also taught as an adjunct instructor at Coastal Georgia Community College from 2006 to 2008.

Haywood earned a bachelor’s degree in business education from Georgia Southern University, a master’s degree in educational management and development from Troy State University and a master’s degree in educational leadership from Georgia Southern University.

“RECA is a tremendous program and I am so excited about the opportunity to work with students to help them realize the opportunities that await them beyond high school,” Haywood said.  “As a student in a magnet program in high school, my eyes were opened to the possibilities that are out there if you pursue a post-secondary education.  That’s what RECA is all about and I’m looking forward to helping students make their dreams a reality.”

“Mrs. Haywood brings leadership and organizational skills to RECA that she developed through experiences in business and career/technical education,” Mann said.  “We know that she will develop relationships with the students at RECA and instill the rigor that will enable them to meet their goals through higher education.”

Glynn Middle students make All-State Chorus

Six members of the Glynn Middle School Chorus were recently selected for the 2010 Georgia Music Educators All-State Chorus. The students had to pass two auditions that included performing a solo, major, minor and chromatic scales, sight-reading, and tonal memory.  They also performed sections of seven songs that they would perform in full later.  The students traveled to Savannah for three days to work with a distinguished conductor and then performed a concert with other top students from around the state.  The Glynn Middle School Chorus is directed by Leslie Jackson.  Pictured (front row L to R) are Dalton Rocha, Rachel Thompson, Tori Wolfe, (back row L to R) Victoria Pelletier, Ian Atkins and Caleb Brown.
