Assistive Technology Minimize

What is it?

The Individuals with Disabilities Education Improvement Act of 2004 defines and prescribes special education and assistive technology.

According to IDEIA, assistive technology includes both devices and services.

Assistive Technology Device- any item, piece of equipment or product system, whether acquired commercially off the shelf, modified, or customized, that is used to increase, maintain, or improve functional capabilities of children with disabilities.
(Individuals With Disabilities Education Improvement Act of 2004)

Assistive technology devices are on a continuum ranging from low tech devices to high tech devices. The best solution is usually the lowest tech solution that meets the learner’s need.

Assistive Technology Services- any service that directly assists a child with a disability with the selection, acquisition, or use of an assistive technology device.

Who may need AT?

A student who is identified as having a disability. AT must be considered for all students who exhibit a disability.

A student with a disability who requires use of a device to function. The device enhances the student’s capabilities and helps to remove barriers to performance. (Keep in mind that AT can be a barrier)

Where do I find AT Materials?

The assistive technology library is located at the District Learning Center. See our picture catalog under "Resouces" on the right of this screen.
